The service

Afloat repair alongside, heavy work in the workshop

Vessel repair divides in two, and knowing which half a job belongs to before anyone quotes it saves days. Inspection and fault diagnosis, engine and pump work in place, electrical repair, welding and structural work are carried out alongside at your berth. Rewinding, dynamic balancing, machining and manufacturing come back to the workshop, because each depends on equipment that does not travel. We scope across both, so a vessel is opened up once rather than twice.

That matters most on the jobs that cross trades, which is most of them. A generator that will not hold load is rarely one fault: a winding, then an excitation or AVR problem, then a bracket nobody can source. Split across three suppliers it becomes three attendances, three quotations and no single owner of the date. Holding electrical, machining and fabrication capability in one company keeps the whole sequence in one scope.

Work starts with an assessment of hull condition, machinery performance and onboard systems, and a written statement of what was found. Most of what becomes an expensive failure shows up earlier as a vibration reading, a temperature, a falling insulation value or a pressure drop — which is the argument for a planned maintenance interval built around the vessel's real duty rather than a generic schedule.

In short

What does ship repair and maintenance cover?

Ship repair and maintenance covers the machinery and structural work a vessel needs to stay in service: engine, generator and pump overhauling, electrical repair, welding and hull work, and planned maintenance between surveys. Some of it is done at the berth; the rest goes to a workshop.

Knowing which half a job belongs to before anyone quotes it is what saves days. Inspection, fault diagnosis and work in place are carried out at your berth across Dubai and Sharjah; rewinding, balancing and machining come to the workshop.

Pump work makes up a large share of vessel attendance; pump overhauling and repair sets out how an overhaul runs and what to send for a quotation. More on the workshop behind it in about Best Anchor Marine Services.

Scope of work

Marine engine, generator and pump overhauling

Engine, generator and pump work makes up the bulk of vessel attendance, supported by our own machine shop when a component can be recovered instead of replaced and waited on.

Engine top end

 — cylinder head and valve reconditioning, pistons, rings, liners and injector work

Engine bottom end

 — crankshaft and bearing inspection, with machining where a component is recoverable

Engine systems

 — turbocharger and exhaust, fuel and injection, cooling, lubrication and governor

Reassembly and running

 — timing, alignment and a proving run before handover

Generators

 — stator and rotor inspection, AVR and excitation diagnostics, insulation and winding testing, load testing

All types of pumps

 — bilge, ballast, fuel transfer, lube oil, hydraulic, firewater, cooling and sanitary

Configurations

 — centrifugal, multistage, submersible and positive displacement sets

Pump overhaul

 — strip, clean, wear and cavitation assessment, new seals, gaskets and bearings

Finishing

 — shaft alignment, impeller balancing, corrosion coating and pressure testing

Matched sets

 — the pump motor rewound and balanced in the same visit so the set goes back complete

When to call us

What usually brings a vessel to us

The symptoms below are the ones worth acting on early, because each has a cheap version and an expensive version depending on how long it runs.

A generator that will not hold load

 — excitation, AVR, winding or fuel, and worth diagnosing before parts are ordered

Exhaust temperature spread across cylinders

 — injection, valve or turbo condition showing itself on the gauges

Blue or black smoke and rising oil consumption

 — rings, liners or injection, and the case for a top-end inspection

A pump that has lost head or is drawing more current

 — wear rings, impeller erosion, cavitation damage or a failing seal

Repeated seal or bearing failures on the same unit

 — alignment, imbalance or pipe strain rather than the part itself

Falling insulation readings on a motor or alternator

 — moisture ingress and ageing, trending towards an earth fault

Vibration through a deck or a machinery seat

 — imbalance, misalignment, a slack foundation or a bent shaft

Wastage, cracking or corroded piping found at inspection

 — structural and pipe renewal work best done before the next voyage

How the work runs

How a vessel job runs, from attendance to handover

The same sequence applies whether the work is a single pump or a full engine overhaul. It exists so the findings and the cost are agreed before the vessel is committed to a scope.

01

Attendance and assessment

We attend the vessel, assess hull condition, machinery performance and onboard systems, and take the readings the case calls for — insulation values, vibration, temperatures and dimensional checks.

02

Written scope and quotation

You receive what was found, what we recommend and what it costs, including which parts of the work happen alongside and which come back to the workshop.

03

Dismantling and measurement

Components are stripped and measured against tolerance so wear is proven rather than assumed before parts are ordered or machined — and so the second quotation, if there is one, is based on numbers.

04

Repair, machining and manufacture

Overhaul, rewinding, machining and any fabricated or manufactured items are progressed together in-house instead of queuing behind separate suppliers.

05

Testing

Insulation and load testing on electrical work, pressure testing on pumps and piping, and running and tuning on engines before anything is signed off.

06

Reinstatement and record

Equipment is refitted and commissioned on board, and you get the findings and readings for the vessel's record, with a recommended interval for the duty it runs.

Applications

Vessels, systems and planned maintenance

We work on commercial craft, offshore support vessels and workboats, tugs, barges and privately owned motor yachts, attending alongside in Dubai and Sharjah. Structural and hull repair, welding and corrosion control are carried out in the same visit as mechanical and electrical work rather than as a separate mobilisation.

Planned maintenance programmes are built around the vessel's actual duty and the history we hold for its machinery — electrical system checks and insulation trending, propulsion and auxiliary servicing, pump and motor condition monitoring, coatings and corrosion control — with attendance when something fails between intervals. That record is what turns a series of repairs into a maintenance position you can budget.

Before you enquire

What to send with a vessel enquiry

Tell us the vessel, the equipment and the symptom. Photographs of the nameplate and the installation usually answer more than a description does, and they let us bring the right parts to the first attendance.

Vessel and location

 — type, where she lies, and whether she is alongside, at anchor or due to dock

Equipment

 — engine, generator or pump make and model, or a photograph of the motor nameplate

Symptom and history

 — what changed, when, any readings taken and what has already been tried

Scope

 — inspection and report first, or a known repair carried out

Timing

 — sailing date, shutdown window or survey date, so the work can be planned against it

FAQs

Ship repair and overhauling questions

Both. Inspection, diagnosis, engine and pump work in place, electrical repair and welding are carried out at your berth in Dubai and Sharjah. Rewinding, dynamic balancing, machining and manufacturing are done in the workshop because they depend on fixed equipment. We scope a job across the two so the vessel is opened up once.

A top-end overhaul deals with the cylinder heads, valves, injectors, pistons, rings and liners without disturbing the crankshaft, and suits an engine losing compression or burning oil. A full overhaul takes the bottom end as well — crankshaft and bearing inspection, with machining where a component can be recovered. Which one you need is a measurement question, and we answer it after the strip rather than before.

All types — bilge, ballast, fuel transfer, lube oil, hydraulic, firewater, cooling and sanitary, in centrifugal, multistage, submersible and positive displacement configurations. Each is stripped, cleaned, assessed for wear and cavitation damage, rebuilt with new seals and bearings, aligned, balanced, coated where required, pressure tested and reassembled.

Yes, and it is usually worth doing. The motor is rewound and balanced in the same visit so the set goes back as a matched unit rather than a repaired pump bolted to a tired motor that fails three months later.

Yes. Generator work covers stator and rotor inspection, AVR and excitation diagnostics, insulation and winding testing, and the engine side of the set, with load testing before it returns to service so the set is proven at its rating rather than just started.

Breakdown attendance is considered. Send the vessel, the location, the equipment and the fault, and we will tell you straight away what can be attended and when — including when another contractor would get to you sooner.

Yes. Programmes are built around the vessel's duty and the equipment history we hold — insulation trending, vibration readings, pump and motor condition — rather than a generic service interval copied from a manual.

No. We are a repair and engineering contractor, not a shipyard: we attend vessels alongside and take machinery into our own workshop. Where a job genuinely needs a dock, we will say so rather than work around it.
