Pump overhauling and repair in the UAE

Marine and industrial pumps stripped, measured, overhauled and tested — at your berth or plant, or in our Sharjah workshop, with the shafts, sleeves and wear rings machined in the same building.

The service

What is pump overhauling?

Pump overhauling is stripping a pump down completely, measuring and assessing every wearing part against the original fit, replacing or recovering what has gone, and reassembling and testing the pump before it goes back into service. It is not the same as a repair, which replaces the one part that failed and leaves the rest alone.

The difference matters commercially. A pump that has lost head rarely has one fault — the clearances have opened up, the wear rings have gone, the shaft is scored where the seal runs and the bearings have taken the vibration that resulted. Replacing the seal alone puts the pump back in service with all of that still in it, and it comes back.

We overhaul marine and industrial pumps of all types, in centrifugal, multistage, submersible and positive displacement configurations. The parts that usually stop an overhaul — a scored shaft, a worn sleeve, wear rings that are no longer available — are machined in our own machine shop, so the job does not stall waiting on an import.

The process

How a pump overhaul runs

The sequence is the same whether the pump comes to the workshop or we attend it in place. What changes is how much can be done without lifting it out.

Inspection

 — what the pump is doing now, what changed, and what the duty actually is, before anything is dismantled

Strip and clean

 — the pump dismantled and cleaned so the wearing surfaces can be seen rather than guessed at

Wear assessment

 — clearances, wear rings, impeller condition and the pitting that tells you the pump has been running cavitated

Machining

 — shafts, sleeves, wear rings and casing faces recovered or made new in our own shop

Reassembly

 — new seals, gaskets and bearings, built back to the original fit rather than to what will go together

Testing

 — shaft alignment, impeller balancing, corrosion coating where needed, and pressure testing before despatch

Why pumps are sent for overhaul

These are the symptoms that bring pumps in. Most of them have more than one cause, which is why an assessment comes before a quotation rather than after it.

Lost head

 — usually opened-up clearances and worn wear rings rather than a failed part. The pump still runs; it just no longer delivers.

Seal leakage

 — a mechanical seal rarely fails on its own. A scored shaft or sleeve, or a shaft running out of true, will end a new seal as quickly as it ended the old one.

Bearing noise

 — often the consequence of misalignment, an out-of-balance impeller, or a pump that has been running against a closed or throttled discharge.

Vibration

 — points at alignment, balance, bearing condition or cavitation. Which one it is changes the whole scope, so it is worth measuring rather than assuming.

Cavitation damage

 — pitting on the impeller and casing means the pump has been running with insufficient suction. Overhauling it without addressing the cause simply buys time.

Motor running hot

 — frequently a mechanical problem in the pump rather than an electrical one. We can rewind and balance the motor in the same visit so the set goes back complete.

Repair

What does a pump repair involve?

A pump repair replaces the part that failed and returns the pump to service. An overhaul assesses everything that wears and puts the whole pump back to its original fit. Which you need depends on what the pump is doing: a single failed seal on an otherwise sound pump is a repair; a pump that has gradually lost head needs the overhaul.

We take on both across the UAE, at your berth or plant and in the Sharjah workshop — and where a repair would simply return the pump to a condition that fails again, we say so before quoting rather than after.

Mechanical seals

 — replaced with the shaft and sleeve measured first, because a scored shaft ends a new seal quickly

Bearings

 — renewed with alignment and balance checked, since bearings rarely fail without a cause behind them

Impellers

 — repaired or replaced, including assessment of any cavitation damage

Shafts & sleeves

 — recovered or made new in our own machine shop rather than sourced in

Wear rings

 — renewed where clearances have opened up and the pump has lost head

Couplings

 — realigned, which is the cause behind a good share of repeat failures

Applications

Pumps and applications we cover

On vessels: bilge, ballast, fuel transfer, lube oil, hydraulic, firewater, cooling and sanitary pumps, in centrifugal, multistage, submersible and positive displacement configurations.

Ashore: cooling and chilled water circuits, process and transfer duties, firewater sets and building services pumps in plant across Dubai and Sharjah. Where the pump is one half of a set, the motor is rewound and balanced alongside it so the whole assembly returns tested rather than half-repaired.

What to send with a pump enquiry

A nameplate photograph and a description of what changed will usually get you a useful first reply. We assess before quoting rather than pricing blind, and if replacement is the better buy than overhaul we will say so.

FAQs

Pump overhauling and repair questions

Stripping a pump down completely, measuring and assessing every wearing part against the original fit, replacing or recovering what has worn, then reassembling, aligning and testing it before it returns to service.

A repair replaces the part that failed. An overhaul assesses everything that wears — clearances, wear rings, impeller, shaft, sleeves, bearings and seals — and puts the pump back to its original fit. Where a pump has lost performance gradually, an overhaul is usually the work that is actually needed.

All types: bilge, ballast, fuel transfer, lube oil, hydraulic, firewater, cooling and sanitary duties, in centrifugal, multistage, submersible and positive displacement configurations. Tell us the pump and the duty and we will confirm what is involved.

Both. Inspection, fault diagnosis and a good deal of pump work are carried out at your berth or on site. Work that needs machining or balancing comes to the Sharjah workshop — and knowing which half a job belongs to before anyone quotes it saves days.

A seal rarely fails by itself. A shaft or sleeve scored where the seal runs, a shaft out of true, misalignment at the coupling or excessive vibration will all end a new seal quickly. That is why the shaft and the alignment get measured rather than just the seal replaced.

Yes. Shafts, sleeves, wear rings and casing faces are machined in our own shop from a drawing, a sample or the worn original, allowing for wear so the replacement restores the original fit. Obsolete pump components are a large share of what comes through the machine shop.

Yes. Shaft alignment and impeller balancing are done as part of reassembly, and pressure testing is carried out before despatch.

Yes, and it is usually the sensible way to do it. The pump motor can be rewound and balanced in the same visit so the set goes back complete — see motor rewinding and dynamic balancing.
